Lowell Thomas dubbed Ellicottville the “Aspen of the East”. The New York Times more recently referred to it as “The Ski Town that Aspen Used To Be Like.” Either way, Ellicottville is a true ski town with excellent restaurants, craft breweries and bars where you can dance the night away! Of course, to be a ski town, you must have great skiing and Ellicottville has that in abundance. While it might not match Aspen’s vertical, Ellicottville does boast two fabulous hills in Holimont and Holiday Valley. Ellicottville real estate is also much more affordable than its western counterpart. Holimont is North America’s biggest private ski club and Holiday Valley is a public ski hill that consistently ranks among the top 5 Best in the East by Ski Magazine. You can thank Lake Erie and its lake effect for the very respectable 180 inches that is Ellicottville’s Average Snowfall.
Ellicottville was born as a ski town. However, it is increasingly becoming a four seasons destination. As the snow melts on the pistes of Holiday Valley, the fairways come in to view. The Double Black Diamond is probably the best known golf course in Ellicottville, but the area boasts a number of fine courses such as Elkdale, Springville and Ischua Valley. The mountain coaster at Holiday Valley offers thrills (and hopefully no spills!). National Geographic named Ellicottville one of America’s top adventure towns. The International Mountain Biking Association calls Ellicottville “epic”. The surrounding area offers fabulous fishing, boating and even white water rafting. Ellicottville boasts a year round schedule of festivals, headlined by the Fall Festival. The Fall Festival corresponds with Canadian Thanksgiving and is a wonderful combination of live music, good food and, of course, the stunning autumnal colours.
Ellicottville is a charming, old style ski town in Western New York. It is often referred to as, “the Aspen of the East”, but the phrase has been misused over the years.
The term was first bestowed by Lowell Thomas over 50 years ago. The comparison referred to Aspen as it was in the 60s and 70s. Since then, of course, Aspen has exploded. While the downtown architecture still bears some resemblance to that of Ellicottville, Aspen’s storefronts are now dominated by luxury brands such as Gucci, Bvlgari and Burberry. The median price of a condo is over $4 million. A more recent New York Times article describes Ellicottville as, “The Ski Town that Aspen Used to Be Like”. However, this is just fine by everyone who knows and loves our little ski town.
A Skier's Paradise
In winter, Ellicottville fills with skiers. Holiday Valley Ski Resort is located to the south of the village. It boasts over 290 acres of skiable terrain with extensive night skiing. HoliMont is North America’s largest private ski club. Snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and tubing means there is something for everyone. Additionally, for non-skiers and those who just want to do nothing, Ellicottville’s spas, fabulous restaurants and great brew pubs are well renowned.
Not Just a Winter Destation
In summer, you can discover 9 golf courses within 20 miles. In addition, nearby lakes and rivers offer a wide variety of fishing and boating opportunities. There is even white water rafting less than an hour away. National Geographic Magazine lists Ellicottville as one of its Best Adventure Towns. The International Mountain Biking Association describes Ellicottville as “Epic”.
The Allegany Casino
The Seneca Allegany Casino is also just 15 minutes away. It has over 2000 slot machines and 33 of your favorite table games, including blackjack and craps.
Ellicottville is also famous for its festivals. The “Fall Festival”, is held on Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. It is the best known on the festival calendar. However, don’t miss the Jazz and Blues weekend, the summer music festival, the Beer and Wine Festival, the Centurion cycling race and many others.
